My Very First Facial

Last week I had one of those where-have-you-been-all-my-life/what-was-I-waiting-for!? moments. That moment was my first ever facial. If you’ve ever had a facial, I’m sure you’re thinking how badly I was depriving myself all of these years, and I couldn’t agree more!

Melissa Allen, of SPA Melissa Allen in Hyde Park, Cincinnati, was kind enough to reach out and offer me a 60 minutes facial and skin consultation. It was as if she had read my mind! My skin has been a problem area for me since college, when I was fortunate enough to get late onset acne #luckyme, and lately it’s really been giving me problems. I had been increasingly frustrated and self conscious when, BAM! Cue Melissa with her super timely offer, and you’ve got one very fortunate, and happy girl!

I have to admit, I had no idea what to expect going into the facial, nor did I really know what expectations would be realistic to have for my skin after the fact. Well, the entire experience was completely amazing, and I now feel like I know my skin better, and can therefore care for it properly.

So,what exactly happened during my 60 minute facial with Melissa? Allow me to break it down. First, Melissa and I just sat down and talked about my skin and my expectations. She made sure I didn’t have any allergies to the various products she may be using throughout the treatment, and she also asked me to describe different aspects of my skin and skin care routine. Things like, is my skin more oily or dry, and what products do I use on a daily basis. (Eye opening lesson #1: St. Ive’s Apricot scrub is not your friend)

After we chatted a bit, we got into the facial. Melissa was so informative and walked me through everything she was doing the entire way. She also did a great job making it a personalized experience allowing me to choose an essential oil which would be used throughout the facial for extra relaxation. Melissa began with a scalp massage, which immediately put me in total relaxation mode, cleansed my face, and then inspected my skin more closely to further develop a plan of action.

I think the things I learned about my skin from her inspection were the most amazing part of the entire 60 minutes, and that’s saying something because the warm towels and scalp massage were AHHHMAZING. Melissa shocked me by explaining that my skin actually isn’t oily, instead it’s quite the opposite. My skin is so dehydrated that it produces extra oil to compensate #mindblown I was also told that I have a lot of keratinized skin build up, black heads, and milia…oh my! Basically, my pores are very clogged with old, dead skin cells I thought I was eliminating by using an exfoliator. Good intentions, wrong product. In order to begin reversing these things and get my skin back on track, Melissa suggested the following treatments:

Treatments Received:

  • Coconut Papaya Enzyme: helps to removed keratinized skin cells and add hydration
  • Ultrasonic Scrubber: cleans out clogged pores
  • LED light therapy: a triple threat! Kills bacteria, decreases inflammation, and increases radiance
  • Gogi Berry Masque: helps add hydration and balance the pH of the skin

I wasn’t expecting the facial to be so personalized for my needs, but I was very impressed with the treatments I received and the time dedicated to each. Nothing ever felt rushed, or forced. After the treatments were completed, Melissa and I sat down once more together to devise a plan for what I could do at home to make my skin flawless! (..or you know, healthy and much improved) She suggested some products, many of which she used during my facial and I therefore already knew I enjoyed, and what times of the day to use them for best results. Melissa also set up a suggested facial schedule to really get my skin responding to treatment and cleared up ASAP. It looks like right now, since my skin has sort of been deprived of any proper TLC, biweekly facials are what’s going to work best, but monthly and eventually seasonal sessions are what we are aiming for.

Going into the facial, I was excited for the experience and thought of it as sort of an extra special treat, like you know, a treat yo self activity. After my enlightening session with Melissa however, I now see facials as something that can and should be part of my routine and I will definitely be going back. If you live in the Cincinnati, or even the tri-state area, I highly suggest you pay a visit to SPA Melissa. Your skin will thank you!
